During the weekend 17-18 February Odessa celebrated the arrival of Maslenitsa in the traditional folk style. Various festive events were held at two locations – at the rotunda in Gorsad and in Shevchenko Park near the stageside “Rakushka”. All the events were prepared by the art collectives of the city with the support of the of the City Council Department of Culture and Tourism.
Concert bands, choral collectives of Odessa and the region, folklore ensembles performed for the Odessans and guests of the city. According to the city department, the main purpose of this celebration was the revival of interest in learning more about traditions and rituals of this folk holiday in Ukrainian culture. For two days, food courts worked to treat Odessa citizens with traditional Maslenitsa dishes: pancakes, vareniks, sweets and hot drinks. Folklore and ethnographic collective “Vesnyanka” and the Cossack Choir “Kozatskie Kolo” got the guests acquainted with the traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa in the age-old Ukrainian style and performed ritual songs. Masters of folk crafts conducted master classes of making traditional “motanka” dolls and souvenirs in handmade style. A bright performance of actors on stilts of the theater “Carnival” especially pleased the young guests of the holiday.
Let’s hope that such festivals, held cheerfully and with colorful emotions, will really help to revive interest in the traditions of our ancestors, in Ukrainian culture and history.
